I recently spoke with Mike Estep, who spent decades working for managed service providers before joining Blackpoint Cyber as chief client officer in March 2024. Estep said he made the move largely because of how the cybersecurity vendor helped his MSPs over the years.
“Blackpoint provided us the technology, the people, the process to know that at two in the morning on a Saturday, someone was going to do something,” said Estep, one of the founders of MSP portfolio company Blue Alliance, which owns several companies on the 2025 MSP 501. “I didn't need another ticket, I didn't need another email, I didn't need another alert. We're most famous for our MDR platform, which we developed. We are now introducing multiple products in our platform called CompassOne, which we're excited to bring forward.”
CompassOne has been in early customer access and is close to launch. The platform is designed to minimize the number of tools MSPs need to provide cybersecurity. Estep said CompassOne can do for cybersecurity tools what Professional Services Automation (PSA) software did for ticket and billing systems.
“I like to say, ‘Hey, listen. You know, every tool does 80% of what we need, but I need 40 tools for that last 20%,’” Estep said. “So we have really been building CompassOne, and really focused on solving that MSP problem of, ‘How can we kill this engineering debt that we've created, because we have so many tools and so many of these and so many of those, and so many dashboards.’
“I remember traditional ticketing systems. We used time and management systems to do billing before we called ourselves MSPs. And then along comes PSAs, and it revolutionized how we're doing business. I think that evolution is coming to the security space.”
Estep will be at the MSP Summit in September in Orlando, Fla., along with Blackpoint Cyber’s CEO Gagan Singh.
